Many women experience mild to severe pain during periods which can be lot discomforting, home remedies for menstrual cramps are the best ways to reduce the pain and cure the disorder in a short time. Menstrual cramps is a pain in abdomen and pelvic region which occurs during period, it is different than pre-menstrual syndrome but many women can suffer with both of the problems. The pain caused during menstrual periods can be discomforting and can vary from mild to severe in intensity. Severe pain is so troubling that it can restrict a woman's normal daily activities. Nearly 50% of all women experience menstrual cramps at some point of their life or to some degree, nearly 15% suffer with severe menstrual cramps. Medically menstrual cramps are called as Dysmenorrhea and it has been classified into two categories, primary dysmenorrhea and secondary dysmenorrhea. Primary dysmenorrhea occurs within six months to a year following menarche whereas secondary dysmenorrhea may be evident at menarche but mostly occurs later in life.

Primary and secondary dysmenorrhea is caused by normal contractions of uterus. Women are not aware of these contractions but uterus contracts and relax to shed the membrane. During menstrual cycle these contractions become intense to shut off blood supply to some part of uterus causing mild to severe pain in the abdomen and pelvic region. Primary dysmenorrhea occurs as woman's body is learning to adjust according to menstrual cycle and that is why this problem creates mild and short term pain and problem goes away on its own in a year at the most. But secondary dysmenorrhea is caused by certain reasons and causes pain which is intense and stay for longer duration until treated.

Endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, imbalance of prostaglandins, uterine fibroid tumors and intrauterine devices are commonly found causes of menstrual cramps. Emotional stress, retroverted uterus, lack of physical activity and narrow cervical canal are other known causes of menstrual cramps. Home remedies for menstrual cramps can effectively reduce pain and discomfort caused by any of these reasons to provide relief. Mild to severe pain in abdomen and pelvic region are symptoms of menstrual cramps which go away after the period is over. Pain in pelvic region during normal days or after making love is also a symptom of menstrual cramps. Ginger provides one of the effective home remedies for menstrual cramps. Take a piece of ginger and cut it into small pieces, add it to a glass of water and boil it on a low flame in a covered utensil. Allow it to cool down and consume hot, consume two to three cups in a day for effective relief from menstrual cramps. Adding ginger in the diet as spice or salad ingredient also provides relief from menstrual cramps.

Mix juices of parsley, beet, carrot and cucumber in equal quantities and consume this juice at least three times in a day. This will promote smooth menstrual flow and also relieves pain and cramps in the abdomen during period. Parsley juice alone is also an effective treatment for menstrual cramps. Take two tablespoon of holy basil leaves, add them to a pint of water and boil in a covered utensil for at least 15 minutes. Put this mixture to cool down in a tightly closed container and drink half cup of this mixture every hour to relieve menstrual cramps. Cinnamon also contains rich anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic properties, consume cinnamon liberally with diet or by adding it to a cup of tea few times in a day to relieve pain and discomfort. It also works as one of the most effective home remedies for menstrual cramps.

Mint is very effective in relieving pain and discomfort during menstruation cycle. Chewing few leaves of mint in every couple of hours is one of the simplest home remedies for menstrual cramps. Mint leaves can be added to tea for relieving pain and discomfort and also mint leaves can be consumed with diet in raw form. In either way consumption of mint provides relief and works as one of the effective home remedies for menstrual cramps.

Tub bath is another one of the popular home remedies for menstrual cramps. Fill the tub with warm water and add two tablespoons of salt and baking soda each to it. Allow the salt and soda to get mixed with water completely. Taking tub bath in this mixture works very effectively to relieve pain and cramps during periods.

Applying hot compresses is simple and one of the effective home remedies for menstrual cramps. Placing a hot water bottle on the lower abdomen reduces the intensity of contractions to relieve pain and cramps. One can also soak a towel in hot water and place it on the abdomen to cure the pain. Production of prostaglandins is believed to be the biggest cause of causing cramps during periods. One can sprinkle a teaspoon of flax seed in yoghurt or cereals or salad for effectively relieving the troubling symptoms of the problem.

Increased intake of all types of fruits and fruit juices, consumption of all types of green leafy vegetables particularly kale, cabbage and spinach is very beneficial diet for relieving menstrual cramps. Calcium and magnesium rich diet is also very effective, one can also take supplements of these minerals for relieving the pain and discomfort during periods. Regular exercises keep internal system fit and healthy and also reduce the intensity of uterine contractions to alleviate the problem of menstrual cramps.
