Home Remedies for Cold Sores, Natural Remedy

Cold sores are caused by Herpes Simplex Virus and occur in the form of painful fluid filled blisters mostly around lips, mouth and nose, home remedies can control activity of this virus and can provide quick relief. These blisters are usually accompanied by fever hence these are also called as fever blisters. In the beginning person might feel little tingling or irritation on any part of the skin around lips, mouth or nose which can later turn into a painful blister with whitish fluid inside. The virus causing cold sores is highly infectious and can spread from one person to another. After first infection virus enters into nerve cell and travels up to ganglion, here it resides in a dormant stage and after sometimes it starts multiplying or breeding and travels back to the nerve to cause cold sores. Body's normal defense mechanism is unable to control the entry and breeding of this virus without external support hence cold sores recur in a person once infected by this virus.

This virus can spread from one person to another by kissing, sharing towels, utensils, razors, lipsticks and through oral contact. Cold sores are most infectious when they are like blisters or when they burst. Infection can spread even when blisters are not present through saliva and unprotected lovemaking. Some patients experience tingling or slight pain on the skin few hours or few days before formation of blisters. Some people may have fever before occurrence of blisters. Occurrence of fluid filled painful blisters red in color is a symptom of cold sore. This virus can be kept inactive in the body but cannot be flushed out, people experience its reoccurrence however the frequency of its reoccurrences vary from person to person some may experience it twice in a month and some may face it twice in a year. The blister age is usually short and it goes away in one or two days at the most, leaving a scab which also vanishes in one or two days. Some triggers like pregnancy, hormonal imbalance, gum infection or surgery, dental treatment, cosmetic surgery, stress and fatigue are known to cause reoccurrence of cold sores.

There are few effective home remedies for cold sores which can provide quick relief from cold sores and also helps in preventing its reoccurrence. Rubbing ice on the blister is commonly practiced home remedy. The touch of ice inhibits the activity of the virus and later allows blood flow towards the area where body's white blood cells can control and cure the outburst quickly.

Rubbing turmeric on the blister is also very effective home remedy, dip a finger in the cup having turmeric powder and press it gently against the blister. Make sure the powder is not touched or used by someone else. If cold sores are in mouth than gargling with baking soda mixed with lukewarm water is an effective treatment. Herpes Simplex Virus cannot multiply in alkaline environment hence baking soda gargles can control the outburst of the virus.

Application of aloe vera gel on the blisters is also one of the useful home remedies for cold sores. Crush two garlic cloves and mix it with water, consuming this concoction everyday is an effective home remedy for curing and controlling the activity of virus causing cold sores. Garlic contains Allicin, this compound is known for controlling the activity of Herpes Simplex Virus.

Cold milk provides another home remedy for cold sores, application of cold milk on the blister by dipping a cotton ball or tampon and pressing gently on the blister for few minutes helps in drying up the blister very quickly.

Consuming zinc lozenges uplifts the immunity system of the body and body's strong defense system can inhibit all types of viruses in the system, for treating cold sores too zinc lozenges are very useful. Application of peppermint oil on the blisters around lips or nose is another very effective home remedy. Peppermint oil has penetrative and strong anti-viral properties to provide effective treatment and works as one of the wonderful home remedies for cold sores.

If blisters have formed in the mouth or on tongue then rinsing mouth with mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and salt is one of the effective home remedies for cold sores. The mixture for rinsing the mouth can be prepared by taking two ounces of hydrogen peroxide, one teaspoon of baking soda and five teaspoons of salt. Mix this in a glass of water and stir it for few minutes. Rinse mouth with this concoction four to five times in a day to effectively alleviate cold sores.

Application of petroleum jelly is also a commonly used home remedy for cold sores, cover the blister with jelly and leave it for few hours, later remove it gently with cotton ball. Apply this at least twice in a day and particularly while going out for quick curing of blisters.

Raw onion is also one of the useful home remedies for cold sores in controlling the activity of virus and is highly recommended to prevent cold sores from getting worse. A small piece of raw and freshly cut onion can be applied on the blister for relief. Another home remedy for curing blisters inside mouth or on tongue is provided by plum juice. Two tablespoons of freshly squeezed plum juice can be used to rinse the mouth to cure the blisters, plum juice is also effective in treating sores outside mouth, cotton ball dipped in the juice can be applied for 20 minutes to cure the blister quickly and effectively.

Eating diet which improves immunity system is very useful for preventing reoccurrence of cold sores. Avoid acidic and salty foods as much as possible. Avoid too much tea or coffee intake. Never try to burst the blister and wash hands thoroughly after touching them, avoid touching the blisters as much as possible. Never try to cover or hide the blister with cloth or any cosmetic cream. Foods rich in vitamin A, C, E, zinc and iron are best for preventing reoccurrence of cold sores and curing its outburst quickly. Increased intake of green leafy vegetables, fruits and particularly citric fruits like lemon and oranges is very beneficial as these fruits improve immunity system which is the best weapon against Herpes Simple virus.
